Waiting on tournament report. Shetland Select winners.

Weekend 6/7 March - Double Header

Two matches, one victory and one defeat, rounded off the 2009-10 league season.
On the saturday Shetland earned a hard fought victory over West Dyce 22-7. Try scorers where Jon Pulley (2), Stewart Mouat (2). One conversion kicked by Paul Grant. MOM Stewart Mouat and DOTD Kristian Fraser. Whilst on the sunday Shetland lost 45-7 to a very street wise Banff team. Ty scorer was Captain Matthew Nicolson with conversion kicked by Paul Grant. MOM was John Roy Nicolson and DOTD was Kristian Fraser.

Sat. 23 Jan. - Shetland 10 Aberdeen Wanderers 6

On paper the result seemed straight forward. Wanderers had only lost one league match in the last 2 seasons scoring almost 1100points in the process, whilst the home team had only beaten West Dyce and Peterhead in the same time period. Five points from the boot of Paul Grant (a penalty and a conversion from each touch line) and a late score from Lincoln Carroll gave Shetland their best result in many a year.

The Shetland team has shown in glimpses that they have the capability to beat teams but poor starts and unforced errors have led to defeats. Thankfully the sporting gods must have been popping along to Clickimin as Shetland cut down on the mistakes, hardly missing a tackle all match. Even the appearance of Mal Smith was thought of as a lucky omen.

The match report can be found here.

Christmas Fixture(s)

At the end of the day only one match was able to be played. On saturday 19 December some 35 hardy (or downright stupid) players turned up to play in a match where the temperature never made it above -2. By the end of the match the youngsters had won by 3 converted tries to 2.

Sat. 5 Dec - Peterhead 13 Shetland 26

Two tries from MotM Maurice Williamson, plus one each from Paul Grant and Nathan Coote gave Shetland the victory over a much improved Peterhead team. Paul Grant kicked three conversions. Full match report here.

Sat. 28 Nov - Scottish Hydro Regional Bowl - Shetland 0 Ross Sutherland 22

A disappointing final score from a match that saw Shetland holding their own for much of the match against a well drilled Ross Sutherland team.
Click here for the match report.

Sat. 21 Nov - Shetland 14 Huntly 22

After a good start with two tries in the opening quarter, Shetland faced their old problem of having a decent amount of the ball but failing to convert their chances.

Been around the world!

In a moment (in fact several minutes) of madness, I worked out the distance that Shetland RFC has travelled from Lerwick, in league and cup matches, since our probationary season back in 2003/4.
Having fulfilled our away fixtures this season the grand total of miles covered is some 26,093 miles in less than 5 seasons. Which is a couple of thousand more miles than the circumference of the earth round the equator.

Young people, old people.....

News:

Just in case you were wondering!

In a moment of boredom I wondered if Mike Skinners televised figure for "this is the distance we will travel our away matches" was correct.
Mr. Skinner pulled the figure of 5000 miles out of the air, but he underestimated.
The actual distance from Lerwick (according to www.theAA.com) for 9 away matches was 6350 miles.

Player Profile No.7

the thoughts of the evergreen Mr Michael Skinner.

Orkney has a furthest travelled ORFC shirt competition.
Below we see the SRFC President wearing his shirt with I believe Cullivoe in the background.

I believe that Forbes also made a new signing during his travels - some Aussie bloke who said "Shetland is the only team I've ever wanted to play for".
